Matter Motors - Frequently asked questions

Matter Setup Code

First, check the setup code of your motor. Eve Motionblinds motors with Matter and Thread have a setup code showing the Matter logo. If you see a different setup code, then you have a motor with Bluetooth or HomeKit technology. In that case, please check out our Bluetooth or HomeKit support.

Eve Motionblinds motors support Matter and Thread. This makes them work with all major smart home platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.

Here is what you need:

  1. Eve Motionblinds motor with Matter and Thread.
  2. Mobile app from the smart home platform of your choice.
  3. Border router with Matter and Thread from the smart home platform of your choice (more info).
  4. If necessary: Thread mesh extender(s) to extend the range of the Thread network.

Google Home, Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Amazon Alexa are the most common smart home platforms. They allow you to manage smart devices such as lights, thermostats, security cameras and blind and shades through one central point, such as a smartphone app or assistant.

To set up a smart home platform, you need to:

  1. Download the latest version of the app from your preferred smart home platform and sign in with your account.
  2. Follow the instructions in the app and make sure to:
    • Turn on Bluetooth on your phone.
    • Grant the app permission to find other devices.
    • Turn on location services.
  3. Create your smart home in this app and give it a name. For example: your surname (Smith Family), home address (10 Green Street), etc.

To setup and control Eve Motionblinds, you need a border router with Thread and Matter from the smart home platform of your choice.

This border router, also called home hub, creates a local Thread network in which smart devices work together and connects this network to other networks, such as Wi-Fi or the Internet. This allows smart devices in your home to be controlled from outside, for example with your smartphone or watch.

Choose the right border router:
https://www.evehome.com/en/hub

To set up your border router, you need to:

  1. Plug it into a power outlet, as it’s a wired device and needs electricity.
  2. Add the border router to the home that you have created in the app of your smart home platform. The app will ask you to connect to your local Wi-Fi network, which you should do.

This is how it works:

More info: check out support and FAQs from your smart home platform.

Battery powered Thread devices such as Eve Motionblinds motors represent endpoints in your Thread network. If the distance between your Thread border router and Eve Motionblinds motor is too long, Eve Motionblinds may not be added to the Thread network and/or may not respond adequately.

In this case, you need to add one or more devices that act as Thread Mesh Extenders / Full Thread Devices (FTDs).

These mains-powered devices that are always on, such as Eve Energy smart plug, can relay data packets and act as extenders within your Thread network. The more of these devices you have in your home, the more stable and greater its reach becomes.

The Eve Energy smart plug can act as mesh extender between your border router and Eve Motionblinds:

Please do the following checks before you start adding Eve Motionblinds to your smart home using the app of your smart home platform:

  1. Install the shade to your window.
  2. Activate the motor by charging it with a USB-C cable.
  3. Check that the end positions of your shade have been programmed by tugging the pull cord once to see if the shade automatically moves to the desired top and bottom position. If this does not work, then you need to program the end positions manually with the buttons on the motor.

How to program end positions?

Once you have all the necessities, chosen and set up a smart home platform, installed the right Thread border router, activated the Eve Motionblinds motor, and set end positions, you can add Eve Motionblinds to your smart home.

Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your smartphone is connected to the Wi-Fi network to which your Thread border router is also connected.
  2. Open the app of your smart home platform and navigate to your home.
  3. Choose the option to add a new Matter device.
  4. Scan the Matter setup code from your Eve Motionblinds motor.
  5. Follow the instructions in the app to add Eve Motionblinds.

This is how it works with:

More info: check out support and FAQs from your smart home platform.

The app of your smart home platform guides you through the setup of your border router with Matter and Thread.

Do the following checks:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone.
  2. Connect your smartphone to your local Wi-Fi network and select this same Wi-Fi network for your border router when the app asks for this.

Is your border router still not connecting? Unplug the border router, wait 30 seconds, and plug it in again. The border router reboots. Do the above checks again and try to add the border router to your home again through the app of your smart home platform.

For more info, check out support and FAQs from your smart home platform:

  7. Enhance your Thread network
If the distance between your Thread border router and Eve Motionblinds motor is too long, Eve Motionblinds may not be added to the Thread network and/or may not respond adequately. In this case, you need to add one or more devices that act as Thread Mesh Extenders / Full Thread Devices (FTDs) such as Eve Energy: https://www.evehome.com/en/eve-energy.
  8. Reset the border router and motor
Have you done the above checks but it's not working? Reset both your border router and your Eve Motionblinds motor and re-add them to your home in the app of your smart home platform. Start with a complete reset of your Eve Motionblinds motor. If it still doesn't work, reset the border router as well.
IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the sixth revision to the Internet Protocol and the successor to IPv4. It functions similarly to IPv4 in that it provides the unique IP addresses necessary for Internet-enabled devices to communicate.
Thread is an IPv6-based mesh networking protocol. Thread border routers use IPv6, which they receive through the router, to allow smart devices such as Eve Motionblinds motors to operate within the Thread network.
This means that IPv6 must be enabled on your router. Usually, IPv6 is enabled by default on routers. If it is not, IPv6 must be turned on.

Upgrade to Matter

The future of smart home has arrived. Matter is here – and Eve Motionblinds motors are ready to be used with the new standard for smart home devices, making them work with all major platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. For first-generation Eve Motionblinds motors with HomeKit firmware, a free over-the-air upgrade to Matter will be available through the Eve app.

Google Home, SmartThings, or Alexa

Upgrading Eve Motionblinds from HomeKit to Matter is worthwhile if you want to control Eve Motionblinds from an additional platform other than HomeKit, such as Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, or Amazon Alexa.

Apple Home

For households that use exclusively Apple devices, upgrading from HomeKit to Matter is optional, but not necessary. If you don't upgrade, Eve Motionblinds will continue to work with HomeKit over Thread like you were used to.

Bluetooth

Once upgraded to Matter, motors no longer support Bluetooth. As a result, Eve Motionblinds cannot be operated over Bluetooth through the Eve app anymore. This means, you will need a border router to control Eve Motionblinds from your smartphone.

No way back

Once upgraded to Matter, you can't migrate the firmware on the motor back to HomeKit. If you don't upgrade to Matter, Eve Motionblinds will continue to work with Apple HomeKit like you were used to.

Want to upgrade Eve Motionblinds from HomeKit to Matter? Visit this webpage.

If re-adding the Eve Motionblinds via Matter after the firmware upgrade does not succeed, please reset it. After the reset, try adding it again and make sure you’re using the correct Matter Setup Code provided to you at the beginning of the upgrade process. Note: iCloud and iCloud Keychain are required to add Matter devices to Apple Home. Make sure they are turned on in your iPhone’s settings.

To check if your Eve Motionblinds has been upgraded successfully, go to Settings > Accessories > your device > Details > Compatibility – this will indicate whether your device has been upgraded to Matter.

Please make sure you have updated your iPhone and home hub to software version 17. If the issue persists, restarting your home hub may improve reliability.

In order to update Eve Motionblinds from HomeKit to Matter, you have to use the Eve app for HomeKit. Once Eve Motionblinds has been upgraded to Matter, you can grant every family member local and direct access to it – no matter which voice assistant or app they prefer.

Eve Motionblinds that are compatible to HomeKit only require the Eve app running on an iOS device to apply firmware updates.

Every platform in a Matter smart home needs its own Matter controller. In Apple Home, HomePod (2nd gen.), HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (2nd gen. / 3rd gen. 128 GB) qualify as Matter controllers. They also act as Thread Border Routers, connecting Eve Motionblinds to your home network.

The entire lineup of Thread-enabled Eve Motionblinds motors will receive free Matter firmware updates over time. We don't have a timeline and order to share at this time.

Yes, you can. For automations, Apple Home makes no difference whether your devices were added to your home through HomeKit or Matter.

Once you have updated your Eve Motionblinds to Matter, open Apple Home, press and hold the tile of your blind and choose Accessory Details. Tap the gear icon in the lower right corner. Tap Turn on Pairing Mode. Wait for Apple Home to display the Setup Code and use it on your secondary platform to connect your device. For the secondary platform, a compatible Matter controller of that platform will be required.

Upgrading to Matter is worthwhile if you want to control Eve Motionblinds from an additional platform. This requires a Matter controller of this platform. If your household uses Apple devices exclusively, upgrading to Matter is optional, and your Eve Motionblinds' feature set or performance will remain unchanged.

Currently, iPhone users can upgrade selected Eve Motionblinds motors to Matter using the Eve app. Eve-specific, custom functionality will be preserved. Please note that once you've upgraded Eve Motionblinds to Matter, you can't migrate it back to HomeKit, and it will no longer support Bluetooth.

Features like programming end limits for blinds and on-device schedules are unique to Eve and are currently not supported by all platforms. While iPhone and iPad users will keep those features when upgrading, they may not be supported from the start on other platforms. Nevertheless, end limits for blinds can be easily programmed using the program buttons on the motor itself.

5. Make sure the iPhone or iPad is connected to the Internet
You need to make sure the iPhone or iPad is connected to the Internet, and on the same Wi-Fi network as the HomeKit devices. You can make sure that the Wi-Fi network is working by checking the Internet connection from multiple devices. If there is no Wi-Fi network, it may be necessary to reboot the router.

6. Make sure the iPhone or iPad is signed into iCloud
Make sure the iPhone or iPad is signed into iCloud. HomeKit and the Home app require iCloud to function.

7. Remove Eve Motionblinds from the Home App, then re-add it
Removing Eve Motionblinds from the Home app and re-adding it can help to resolve connectivity issues. Before re-adding Eve Motionblinds to the Home app, make sure to reset the connection. (note: all settings and automations will be deleted.)

Yes, you can. For automations, Apple Home makes no difference whether your devices were added to your home through HomeKit or Matter.
